What is sedation?

Sedation in dentistry is the process of administering a safe and monitored sedation option while receiving a dental treatment. Many patients with high-anxiety may choose sedation as a means of feeling more relaxed and comfortable during their treatment process. At Access Dental, sedation is always available for our patients during their dental implant treatment to ensure they have numerous options to put them at ease during their visit.

There are several sedation options available. The best sedation option for you is dependent on your specific needs and comfort requirements.

Minimal Sedation

Minimal sedation, known as nitrous oxide, is for patients that prefer full consciousness during treatment. A minimal sedation option offers a minimal dulling of sensation and pain. This option is best for patients that may experience slight anxiety and want to experience greater comfort and relaxation during their treatment process. Minimal sedation is utilized in combination with localized anesthetic to minimize discomfort and ensure a comfortable treatment experience.

Moderate Sedation

Moderate sedation offers a greater reduction of anxiety, general sensation and pain while maintaining consciousness during your dental procedure. Unlike minimal sedation, moderate sedation will offer greater relaxation and may cause some mild drowsiness during treatment. Moderate sedation may be ideal for patients with moderate dental anxiety that may need a stronger sedation option to put them at ease.

General Anesthesia

General Anesthesia is the strongest available sedation method for patients with severe dental anxiety or patients that require a stronger level of comfort. General anesthesia, unlike moderate and minimal sedation, enables patients to experience a deep sleep, where they can be completely unconscious during treatment with no reaction to sensation, pain or discomfort at all.

All of these sedation options can be discussed during a free dental implant consultation and with your dedicated implant provider.
